11 Aug The day I put on a virtual genie costume and squeezed into my brass oil lamp.
We all wish for things. That is just a basic human trait. We wish for wealth, health, love, fame, happiness, and skills. Wishing is different that hope in one important way. Hope can be translated into reality with action and effort. When we wish we are asking for a gift. Many times a wish is granted with negative unanticipated consequences. For example you wish you would win the lottery, your wish is granted but you can’t handle the sudden wealth and responsibility that goes with it and you wind up miserable and broke.
Wishes are granted by some higher power, God, organizations like Make A Wish, or individuals.
Earlier this year, I became an actor in a real life script to grant a wish. I put on a virtual genie costume and squeezed into my brass oil lamp and put a real life play into action.
Prologue
My wife Michele has always wanted a new car with a red bow on it. As many of you know she spent the bulk of last year in the battle of her life to beat esophageal cancer. The radiation, chemo and surgery did not damper her spirit or love of helping others. Just before New Years a drunk driver totaled her car. Then she lost her health insurance. She faced these obstacles like a champion, who would not accept defeat. She is a role model for all of us.
Then her luck changed. She got a 4-year-old wish granted, when she got promoted to the Merchant position at Traders Joe’s. She is now the head of customer service at the Bayshore store. But she still wanted that other wish – a new car with a red ribbon to replace the totaled one.
Act 1
We needed to replace her totaled car so we start visiting car dealers and test-driving some cars. She quickly found her car, a black Honda CRV.
Act 2
Starting the credit paperwork. Michele whispers in the Genie’s ear I wish the car would just appear in the driveway with a red ribbon on it. I pop out of the oil lamp. But instead of talking to Michele, this genie hatches a plot with the sales manager at the dealership (hats off to the team at David Hobbs Honda). A text appears on Michele’s phone indicating a problem with her credit approval. I remind her that they cannot hold the car if she cannot get credit.
Act 3
The plot thickens. We revisit the dealer and they say they are still having problems with getting her credit approved. I spend the rest of the night telling her don’t cry if they sell the car as we can always get another one in a few weeks. Michele is little disappointed.
Act 4
We go back to the dealer. They tell Michele they are still having problems finding a lender. We wait an hour and they lay the carefully prepared bomb on her. The good news – they found a lender, the bad news they had sold the car she picked out.
Her heart was set on that car. She flashed a look of sadness and disappointment. Our salesperson tells her to go in the service department and check the color of another CRV they have.
The mischievous genie had a secret and would not grant this wish without a closing act….
Closing Act
Michele opens the door and her face goes white, expressionless for a second, then a flash of happiness, her lips synch the lines saying … O my god…. There was the car they had sold to someone else; we even signed the paperwork right in front of Michele’s eyes! The buyer just happened to be me! Besides that red ribbon the car was decorated with balloons.
This is when I got a important lesson in life that also left me with a tear in my eye and a warm heart. For the power is not having a wish granted. No the real power is granting someone a wish. The moment of surprise might only last a minute, but the memories last a lifetime.
As I out change out of my genie clothes and just watch Michele bask in the afterglow of getting her wish, I realize just how good this 2 day play really was.
